The Perception of the Internet is Not Authoritative

I was in a meeting 3 weeks ago and the other party said “The Perception of the Internet is Not Authoritative” which I thought was an entertaining idea. This company was explaining to me why they don’t have a website and don’t want one.
Then, last week I was a speaker and attendee at the SEMCON (the 1st Search Engine Marketing Conference in the Philippines) where they kept referring to being “Authoritative” if you wanted to get Top Search Rankings.
What does Google rank as being Authoritative, in the general web o’spehere?

  1. Wikipedia (is the wisdoms of the crowds authoritative?)
  2. About.com (“expert guidance from real people”, ha)
  3. Blogs (journals from your peers)
  4. Big Media (no comments needed)
  5. Sites full of information (which is universally accessible and useful?)

Now I know Google’s Mission; “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Google does this by fighting SPAM with relevancy and authoritative sources, which is why the perception of Google is that they are relevant not authoritative.

China 2009: Mobile Search surpass Computer Search

The number of Chinese consumers searching for information on their cellphones may surpass those visiting Web sites on computers by 2009 and the shift could help Google catch up with Baidu, its rival, Google’s president for China, Lee Kaifu, said in an interview Wednesday.” (via Forbes)

This should be interesting, I wonder how many years it will take for the rest of the world to catch up, what about Yahoo!? Acquisitions Acquisitions Acquisitions…

2012

At least 2,486 people search for the term “2012″ everyday.
Interestingly it seems none of the top results have NO advertising on their pages.
This would be a good property to focus on if it was not time based. After 2012 I don’t believe many people will be searching for this term.
At least 485 people search for the term “2000″ everyday.
hmmmmm

A decision is better then no decision.

Success is not for the timid. It is for those who seek guidance, make decisions, and take decisive action.

Why is Google Calendar #1 for the Search Term “Agenda”?

Whenever I conduct searches through google, (this happens a whole lot in my day) in the back of my mind is always, why are they number 1?
For example, today I was searching for the term “Agenda” and up cameGoogle Calendar as #1 in the SERP. (Search Engine Results Page)
Why are they number 1?
After some link research I saw that Google France is part of the answer.
Google Agenda France
Here are the reasons why I believe Google Calendar is #1 for the term “Agenda”.
  • It’s a Google Property so they are always ranked higher ;)
  • http://www.google.com/calendar has a PR (Google Page Rank) of 8/10.
  • Another Google Property is Named “Google Agenda” – Google France, when users go to Google Calendar they are directed to the Local version of the Google Calendar Property.
  • The Google Propertyhttp://www.google.com/intl/fr/googlecalendar/program_policies.htmlis linking to Google Calenda
    • Agenda is used in the Title.
    • An H4 heading is being used on the page with the term included, “Règlement du programme Google Agenda”
    • The text on the page is using the term “Agenda” several times in the paragraphs.
    • The Text “Google Agenda” is being used to describe the image link and it’s linking to Google Calendar.
There are several more reasons why but those are the quick and dirty reasons.
Then further research with Google Translate tells me that, agenda in French means diary. Not really sure what all that means, as I am not versed in French.
